EcoSpark is proud to call the Artscape Wychwood Barns its home. Artscape Wychwood Barns is a community cultural hub where a dynamic mix of arts, culture, food security, urban agriculture, environmental and other community activities and initiatives come together to provide a new lease on life for a century-old former streetcar facility.

Artscape Wychwood Barns is LEED Gold Certified, embracing environmentally sustainable design by responding imaginatively to the issues of brownfield redevelopment, water/energy conservation and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. It is also the first designated heritage site in Canada to seek LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Canada certification.

As an environmental charity, EcoSpark holds itself to the highest environmental standards in its daily operations and sustainable practices are built into the organizational culture.

Examples include:

  • Transportation: All staff take public transit or ride their bikes to work. Staff travelling on EcoSpark business use the most environmentally responsible mode of transportation that is practical for each situation. Furthermore, EcoSpark is a member of a car-sharing service.
  • Water and Energy Efficiency: In the office, staff drink tap water and bring in their own reusable mugs and bottles. Computers are completely turned off at the end of the work day (i.e., the power bar is turned off). EcoSpark also uses waterless printing when possible and prints on FSC and 100% post-consumer recycled paper.
  • Waste Management: Artscape Wychwood Barns accepts recycling and organic waste. An office set of reusable containers are available for staff when they take-out lunch. For events, we have an organizational set of reusable cups, plates and a coffee carafe. We purchase recycled and recyclable office supplies when possible, e.g., paper and envelopes. We also avoid printing when possible. Otherwise, we print double-sided or on the blank side of “used” paper to reduce paper waste. Lastly, we only use refurbished cartridges/toners for our printers.
  • Local Food and Urban Agriculture: EcoSpark uses local, seasonal and organic criteria when sourcing out food for our events with a list of “green caterers” for events.
  • Flexible Work Schedule: EcoSpark allows for flex hours, teleconferencing and working from home when appropriate, supported by the use of a shared online drive and online conferencing services. This contributes to staff health and well-being, and reduces or eliminates commute times and the pollutions attributed to those commutes.
