Canada committed to achieve the United Nations target of protecting at least 17% of its lands and inland waters by 2020.
The Government of Ontario has supported the target with its Ontario Biodiversity Strategy (target 13), which provides a pathway to protect the places we love.
In Ontario, only 10.7% is currently protected. We need to work together to ensure the next 3 years count so that wild species and wild spaces are protected for generations to come.
The Protected Places campaign is a collaborative initiative of organizations that includes Earthroots, EcoSpark, Ontario Land Trust Alliance, Ontario Nature, Ontario Rivers Alliance, Plenty Canada, and Save The Oak Ridges Moraine (STORM) Coalition.
To date, 40 groups have endorsed the Protected Places Declaration!
